June grins at him. And there it is. The dimple. His dimple, on her face, two feet from his face. My heart stops. I swear it actually stops. Lucas just smiles back at her. He stands up and says, "Congratulations on the job. And on these two." And he means it. He doesn't see it. He has no idea. But somebody does. Celeste is standing very still beside the elevators, looking at my children. "Five," she says softly, like a number she's writing down.
Five years and eight months earlier, I'm still standing in his kitchen, waiting for him to come back.
The woman letting herself into Lucas Calloway's penthouse at seven forty in the morning is not the cleaner.
The cleaner wouldn't be wearing ivory cashmere and a diamond the size of a grape. And the cleaner wouldn't look at me, standing in his kitchen in last night's navy blouse, and smile.
"Oh, sweetheart," she says. "You're still here."
She drops her keys in the bowl by the door. Her own keys. To his door.
"I'm sorry, who are you?"
"Celeste Ward." She says it like I should have it printed on a card. "Lucas's fiancée."
Fiancée. Last night on the roof he talked about his dad, and about hating the hotel business, and about a dog called Biscuit he had when he was nine. He did not talk about a fiancée.
"He didn't mention you."
"No. He doesn't, with the girls." She walks past me into the bedroom like she drew the floor plan herself. She comes back holding the note from his pillow. Back in twenty. Don't you dare leave. L.
She reads it out loud. Then she folds it in half and slides it into her coat pocket.
"He leaves that one for all of them," she says. "It buys him time to call me."
"He called you?"
"Who do you think cleans up, Amara?"
My stomach drops. I didn't tell her my name.
She sits at his marble island and writes a check. Right there, like she's paying a florist.
"Fifty thousand," she says. "For your discretion. And your Uber."
"I don't want your money."
"Everyone says that. Then rent happens." She slides it across. "Here's the other part. You work banquets, yes? One phone call from me and every hotel in this city hears a story about you and the silverware. You'll be serving fries in Jersey."
I want to throw it in her face. I want to wait for him. I want him to walk in with two coffees and tell me she's insane.
The elevator doesn't open. Twenty minutes, the note said. It's been twenty-five.
I take the check. I honestly couldn't tell you why. Maybe I just need proof that this morning happened.
"Good girl," she says.
Seven weeks later I'm lying on paper sheets at the late clinic in Astoria, and Tasha is holding my hand like it's a grenade.
"You're fine," she says. "Everybody's fine. Breathe."
The technician moves the wand. She frowns at the screen. Then she does the one thing you don't want a technician to do. She goes, "Huh."
"Huh what?" Tasha says. "I'm a nurse. Don't huh me."
"There's the heartbeat." The tech turns the screen toward us. "And there's the other one."
"The other what?"
"Heartbeat. You're having twins."
Tasha laughs so loud the tech jumps. I don't laugh. I stare at two tiny flickers on a grey screen, and all I can hear is his voice on the roof, saying, I've never told anyone that.
"Is it the billionaire's?" Tasha whispers.
"Don't call him that."
"Is it?"
"Yeah."
The Calloway Grand looks exactly like it did that night. Gold doors. Doormen in grey. A brass easel in the lobby says the ballroom is closed this evening for a private engagement party.
Theirs. Obviously theirs.
I wrote the letter four times. The fifth one is short. I'm pregnant. It's yours. It's twins. Here's my number. Inside the envelope is the ultrasound printout, folded once.
The clerk at the front desk is twenty, maybe, with a name tag and a very tired smile.
"Can I help you?"
"This is for Lucas Calloway. It's personal."
He looks at the name on the envelope. Then at me. "Is he expecting it?"
"No."
"Can I say what it's regarding?"
I could tell him. I could say it right here in this lobby and watch it travel up fifty-two floors in about four minutes.
"It's personal," I say again.
He lays it on the counter, face down.
So here's the deal I make, standing on that marble with my hands shaking. One letter. One week. If he calls, I tell him everything. If he doesn't call, he made his choice, and he doesn't get to be their father. Not now, not later, not when they're grown and asking.
At the door I look back once.
The clerk is already picking up the phone.
