A stranger knew my shift and wanted obedience. I wanted something I could check. The woman on the telephone said please, once more. I opened it. Inside was a photograph of this room. My chair stood empty. Beyond the microphone, the window was shattered, its frame opening into the rain. A printed time read twelve seventeen. I looked at the real window, still whole. On the back, in my handwriting, were three words. Save him first.
At midnight, the city belonged to people who couldn't sleep. I knew them by the songs they requested. The taxi driver who always asked for something slow. The woman who called from her kitchen and never gave her name. I was Mara, the voice that kept them company until morning. When Elias asked whether I needed anything, I said I was fine. He set down a sandwich anyway. He'd promised his daughter breakfast after his shift. Earlier, we'd rehearsed the emergency cutoff downstairs: one person holding the safety gate, another pulling the red handle. Elias called it the station's only mandatory duet. I had complained about needing a partner for a switch.
Outside the studio window, rain softened every light into a blue blur. Inside, there was cold coffee, a warm mixing desk, and a record with thirty seconds left to play. Then the private line rang. Nobody called that number anymore. I answered without taking my eyes off the meters. A woman was breathing on the other end. Not crying. Trying very hard not to. She said my name and asked me to listen until she finished. Someone would bring a blue envelope to the studio. Whatever they told me, I must not open it. I asked who she was. The line filled with a thin, distant hiss. She said she'd spent all night finding a way to reach me. The record ended. I forgot to start the next one.
Three knocks came from the corridor. Through the frosted glass, I recognized Elias's shoulders and the little torch clipped to his jacket. He lifted something flat beside the window. Even through the glass, I could see the color. Blue. The caller drew a sharp breath. Don't let him leave it. Elias said a woman had dropped it at reception. She'd known my name, my shift, which floor I worked on. I asked him to take it back. The lights dipped. He bent out of sight, putting the envelope down while he reached for his radio. A blue edge slid beneath the door. On the phone, the woman's voice broke. No. Tell him to pick it up. I put my hand against the door. Elias, wait. Then I asked the caller why this mattered. For a moment, I heard only rain. She answered as if every word hurt. This is where I got it wrong yesterday.
